The Big Move: Making the Migration Painless

Before we dive into the settings, let’s get your life moved over. Most people rely on Wi-Fi for this, but if you want to save yourself an hour of staring at a loading bar, here is a proper expert tip.

Use the "Move to iOS" App with a Cable

While the Move to iOS app on the Google Play Store works over Wi-Fi, it is much faster and more stable if you use a physical USB-C to USB-C cable to connect your old Android directly to your new iPhone.

Plug the cable into both devices

Open the app on your Android and follow the prompts

Your iPhone will recognise the wired connection and pull over your contacts, photos, and even your Chrome bookmarks in a fraction of the time

12 Essential Steps to Customise Your iPhone

Now that your data is safe and sound, it is time to dig into the features that make the 2025 iPhone experience special.

1. Lock Down Your Security

Before anything else, head to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Beyond just setting up your face, you must enable Stolen Device Protection. This feature adds a security delay for sensitive actions (like changing your Apple Account password) if you are away from familiar locations like home or work. It is the single best way to ensure a thief can't lock you out of your own life.

2. Remaster the Action Button

The Action Button has replaced the old mute switch. Instead of just using it for "Silent Mode," go to Settings > Action Button. You can map it to open the Camera, turn on the Torch, or even run a custom Shortcut. I have mine set to open my favourite smart home scene so I can turn off the lights with one click.

3. Master the Camera Control Sensor

If you are holding an iPhone 16 or 17, you’ll notice a new capacitive sensor on the side. This isn't just a shutter button. Lightly press it to bring up a zoom slider, or double-tap it to toggle through your Photographic Styles. It makes the phone feel much more like a dedicated camera.

4. Enable RCS Messaging

One of the biggest wins for tech in 2025 is the death of the "blurry video" problem when texting Android users. Go to Settings > Apps > Messages and ensure RCS Messaging is toggled on. Now, when you text your mates who haven't switched yet, you’ll get high-res photos, typing indicators, and read receipts.

5. Meet Apple Intelligence (AI)

Your iPhone is now a lot smarter. In Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, you can set up Writing Tools to help you proofread emails or change your tone from "grumpy" to "professional." You’ll also notice the new Siri has better "onscreen awareness," meaning you can ask it to "send this photo to Mum" while you are looking at a picture, and it will know exactly what you mean.

6. Personalise Your Home Screen with "Spatial Scenes"

iOS now lets you be much more creative. Long-press on your Home Screen, tap Edit > Customise, and try the Tinted option. This allows you to monochromatic all your app icons to match your wallpaper. If you want to go further, check out the new Spatial Scenes for the Lock Screen, which add depth and movement to your background.

7. Protect Your Battery Longevity

Apple now gives you more control over your battery’s health. Go to Settings > Battery > Charging. Instead of just "Optimised Battery Charging," you can set a hard 80% or 90% limit. If you tend to keep your phone plugged in at your desk all day, setting this limit will significantly slow down the chemical ageing of your battery.

8. Redesign Your Control Center

The Control Center is no longer a static grid. Swipe down from the top right and keep swiping to see the new multi-page layout. You can now resize toggles and group them. Want a whole page dedicated to Music or Smart Home? Just tap the Plus (+) icon at the top left to start dragging and resizing.

9. Silence the Noise with Scheduled Summary

Android is great at notification management, but iPhone’s Scheduled Summary is a game-changer for focus. Go to Settings > Notifications > Scheduled Summary. You can choose non-urgent apps (like Instagram or news alerts) to be delivered in a tidy bundle at 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM rather than buzzing your pocket every five minutes.

10. Set Up Emergency SOS via Satellite

This is one of those features you hope you never use. Go to Settings > Emergency SOS and look for the satellite demo. It allows you to send a text to emergency services even if you are in a total dead zone in the middle of the Highlands. It is worth doing the demo once so you know how to point your phone at the sky if things go wrong.

11. Stick with Your Favourites (Default Apps)

Just because you have an iPhone doesn't mean you have to use Apple Maps or Safari. Head to Settings and find your preferred app (like Google Maps or Chrome). You can set them as the Default Browser App or Default Mail App, so links always open where you want them to.

12. Use Live Activities on the Dynamic Island

The pill-shaped cutout at the top of your screen is alive. Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and ensure Live Activities is on. Now, when you order an Uber or check a football score, the info will stay pinned to the top of your screen, even when you are using other apps.

Welcome to the Ecosystem

The real "magic" of the iPhone often comes from how it talks to other devices. If you eventually pick up a Mac or an iPad, keep an eye out for these:

*Universal Clipboard:
Copy a link on your iPhone and simply press "Paste" on your Mac. It feels like a magic trick every time.

*AirDrop & NameDrop:
Want to share your contact info? Just hold the top of your iPhone near another iPhone.

*iCloud Drive:
Your "Desktop" and "Documents" folders can stay perfectly synced across every device you own.

A Final Thought

Switching to a new platform is always a bit of a learning curve, but the 2025 iPhone lineup is perhaps the most "user-friendly" version Apple has ever produced. Between the power of Apple Intelligence and the new customisation options, you can truly make this device your own.
