Can AI Actually Pick the Perfect Christmas Gift? I Put It to the Test

This Christmas, I decided to test a theory rather than doom-scroll gift guides. If AI is capable of writing essays, planning itineraries and building shopping lists... could it actually choose the perfect gifts for real people in my life?

Gift boxes with red bows, a latte in a red cup, a pine cone, and a cartoon robot with a speech bubble displaying a tree against a beige background.

My challenge was simple: To see whether AI could move beyond generic ‘gift guide’ rubbish and actually recommend gifts that felt intentional, personal and human, rather than just algorithmically correct.

Below is what it suggested, and yes, I’ve added Amazon/Etsy affiliate links where appropriate so you can check them out easily.

Gift 1: For the Gamer

AI’s pick:

ASUS ROG Ally Handheld Gaming Console

White handheld gaming console with glowing joysticks and buttons. Screen displays a neon blue and purple logo. Text reads "ROG".

Why AI chose it:

A cloud-native handheld built for Xbox Game Pass, GeForce Now and mobile streaming, no discs or updates needed. Perfect for modern gamers who play across platforms.

My take: If I didn’t already own a few too many consoles, I’d genuinely buy this for myself.

Gift 2: For the Coffee Lover

AI’s pick:

Fellow Opus Conical Burr Coffee Grinder - All Purpose Coffee Grinder Electric

Sleek coffee setup with a black grinder, espresso machine, and two lattes on a wooden counter. Marble backsplash adds elegance.

Why AI chose it:

A premium burr grinder that unlocks café-level flavour whether they use espresso, AeroPress or V60 — it’s the upgrade every coffee nerd secretly wants.

My take: This is the kind of gift that quietly proves you actually get their obsession.

Gift 3: For the Smart Home Beginner

AI’s pick:

Amazon Echo Pop Smart Speaker

Smart speaker with a glowing blue light sits on an orange tray. Behind, red and yellow mugs, jars, and a blue plate on a shelf.

Why AI chose it:

A low-cost entry into voice assistants that works with smart plugs, lights and routines, ideal for someone dipping their toe into automation.

My take: This is the safest ‘first smart home gadget’ I’d recommend to anyone.

Gift 4: For the Person Who Has Everything

AI’s pick:

Ember Temperature Control Smart Mug 2

Black mug on a wooden table with "ember" logo, next to books and a plant. Cozy and minimal setting.

Why AI chose it:

A self-heating mug that keeps their drink at the exact temperature they choose, luxurious, premium, and actually useful for daily life.

My take: It feels unnecessary until you use one, then you never go back.

Final Thoughts

Surprisingly AI didn’t just throw out generic stocking fillers. It made decisions that actually felt thoughtful, like it understood the recipient’s personality rather than just the category. For the first time, I can confidently say AI is now a genuinely useful starting point for gift hunting, especially when you’re low on time and want to look effortlessly intentional.
